All new experiences for pet adoption

Background

As a College student in Canada, I find many of my college friends are purchasing pets as the company because they often feel lonely and anxious due to the school pressure and lack of connection with schoolmates. The pandemic amplifies this “pet therapy” effect, the pet demand reaches its peak during the pandemic, and the prices for dogs and cats are doubling the pre-covid market.

Problems

Shelters and rescues in Toronto are feeling the strain during the pandemic. Some small shelters are forced to close and even surrender their animals during the pandemic due to the restricted offline visiting and increasing the number of incoming pets. I was wondering how I can help the local shelters to accept more adopters and to figure out why purchasing is more popular than adoption among young adults.

Design Goal

To design a service encouraging pet adaptation by providing a better experience for adoption serving so that young adults can feel welcomed and rewarded, and to offer more effective communication between shelters and adopters.

Interviews

I conducted interviews with some young adults aged ranges from 20 to 35 to find out the reasons why pet purchasing is much more popular than pet adoption.
